If you are a citizen of or earned a degree in one of the countries below, you are eligible for an exemption. If you studied in one of the countries, you must submit official copies of your transcripts to verify the completion of your degree.

I studied in a country where English is an official language. Do I have to provide proof of English proficiency?

This will depend on the level of study you completed. To be eligible for an exemption you must have one of the following:

  • Completed an Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree from an English-speaking nation
  • Completed  60 hours of credit from an English-speaking nation
  • Earned a "B" or better in English Composition I, English Composition II, and a Speech class from an English-speaking nation.

My education has always been in English, but English isn't an official language of my country. Do I have to provide documentation of English proficiency?

Yes. If you do not meet any of the exceptions for English proficiency, you must provide results from one of the approved exams. Academic English is different from conversational English. We want to ensure that you will be successful in your program once you arrive.

Is there a petition process?

Yes. There is a petition process to waive the English Proficiency Requirement. You must meet one of the criteria below. If, after review, you do not meet the requirement to petition, you will be asked to submit one of the approved English Proficiency tests.

  • College Level English courses and/or Earned College Credit
  • Demonstrate Qualified Employment Experience
  • Complete a Qualifying Academic Program

I have worked in an English speaking country. Am I eligible to petition?

Applicants who have a minimum of two years of full-time professional employment experience in the U.S. or one of the listed English-speaking countries within five years of the proposed term of initial enrollment. Your employer(s) must submit confirmation of employment on company letterhead as part of the petition process. (Remote work where either the applicant or the company/organization is physically located in a non-qualifying country does not apply.)

I have completed undergraduate college coursework in a English speaking country. Am I eligible to petition?

Applicants who have successfully completed with a “B” or higher Composition 1 and 2 and a Speaking course at an accredited college or university in the U.S., or one of the listed English-speaking countries are eligible to petition.

Alternatively, applicants who transfer with 60 credits and a GPA of 2.00 or better on a 4.00 scale from an accredited college or university in the U.S. or one of the listed English-speaking countries are eligible to petition.

I completed high school in the US or another English speaking country. Am I eligible to petition?

Yes. Applicants who completed their high school or secondary coursework entirely in an English-speaking country are eligible to petition. 

If an applicant completed at least three years of high school in the US or at a U.S. Department of Defense School, you are eligible to petition.

I have completed graduate coursework in a English-speaking country. Am I eligible to petition?

Yes. Applicants who have completed a master's degree or higher in the US or another English-speaking country are eligible to petition.

I have completed a certificate program in an English-speaking country. Am I eligible to petition?

No. In order to be eligible to an English proficiency requirement waiver, you must complete either 60 undergraduate credits in an English-speaking country or a masters or doctoral degree in an English-speaking country.
