The University of Illinois-Springfield (UIS) officially opened the UIS Field Station at Lake Springfield in the Winter of 2019. Located on the shore of Lake Springfield, it is ideally situated to provide the UIS community with opportunities for research, education, and recreation. A key aspect of the Field Station is that it is multi-purpose in nature, and is expected to grow and evolve with the needs of the UIS community.
The Field Station consists of a 2.32-acre property located less than 3/4 of a mile from the UIS campus. It includes a 3,000 square foot building built in 2008 as well as 440 feet of lake frontage and a multi-slot dock. Previously the property was home to the FOP Lake Lodge 55 (Fraternal Order of Police), and before that the property was owned by the 38 Club.
The Field Station includes a large common room, a lab space, restrooms, and equipment storage areas. As renovations progress, additional outdoor spaces will be created. The common room’s configuration can be readily changed to accommodate the needs of the users, including: classroom, lecture space, yoga studio, informal gathering area, conference and meeting room, and art studio to name a few.
