Prairie stars: Popular star parties return to UIS beginning Sept. 8

"Who hasn't looked up at the night sky and pondered a thought or two?

'One of the few things we have in common (as human beings) is an experience with the night sky,' said John Martin, an associate professor of astronomy/physics at the University of Illinois Springfield. 'We experience it differently today than people did 20,000 years ago.

'What are the stages for kids growing up? It's dinosaurs first, then outer space. It's something that captures our imagination, that way."

UIS launches new mobile app

The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) has launched a new mobile app.

Officials say the app benefits students by making it easier for them to identify their academic advisor, schedule appointments and prepare a tentative drag-and-drop course schedule for an upcoming semester through the Advise U tool.

Esports facility opening at UIS

On move-in day, UIS optimistic about enrollment numbers for the fall

The following story was published by The State Journal-Register on Aug. 22, 2023.

About 185 University of Illinois Springfield freshmen were expected to move into residence halls on Tuesday as the school gears up for the start of classes on Friday.

Last year, UIS reversed a five-year downward trend in enrollment, though the 6.4% overall increase was due to the growth of graduate students.

UIS officials said on Tuesday that numbers for this fall were expected to be released on Sept. 11.
