Illinois Innocence Project

Illinois Innocence Project

The Illinois Innocence Project conducts research and investigative activities in cases where there is a strong likelihood that an inmate is actually innocent. The Illinois Innocence Project, housed in the Institute for Legal, Legislative and Policy Studies, was recognized as the only undergraduate innocence program at the National Innocence Project conference in San Diego in mid-January of 2002.

Faculty & Staff

A Committed Faculty of Legal Scholars

The Legal Studies faculty offer expertise in a breadth of interdisciplinary legal fields to enrich the education and opportunities of our students.

Legal Studies

There is a growing need for individuals with a comprehensive understanding of the law. People who are prepared to navigate the complex world of regulations and individual rights. At UIS, Legal Studies students don’t just learn about the law. They engage directly with it. Through coursework and internships, students interact with the Illinois Legislature and state and federal courts. UIS students gain valuable insight into legal institutions and professional environments.

About a year before Christine Mallinson gave birth to her first child, she and her husband agreed that all of their children would take her last name. The decision came down to family cohesion: The couple wanted their children—they eventually had two—to share a last name with the only cousin near their kids in age, who was Mallinson’s niece.
