  • In May 2024, the College of Health, Science and Technology conferred awards to graduating seniors for their outstanding contributions to CHST departments. The department faculty selected the awards that would be given to the students.

Conducting Research

Faculty members of the UIS Department of Psychology are expected to be active scholars and mentor undergraduates in the generation of new scientific knowledge by means of scholarship. In an attempt to facilitate such scholarship the Department has established a participant pool of available research participants.

Requirements for Psychology Students

Prerequisite coursework

The psychology bachelor’s degree is open to all UIS students and transfer students who have met the entrance requirements for admission to UIS.  In addition, all students wishing to be admitted to the Psychology Major must first successfully complete PSY 201 Principles of Psychology (or equivalent) with a grade of C (2.0) or better.

Learning Goals and Outcomes

The UIS Psychology Department has established the following 16 undergraduate learning goals for psychology majors, based upon faculty review of the APA Task Force recommendations (see below) and current curriculum.

Students

Psychology majors have multiple opportunities to work directly with department faculty on research or conduct their own research projects and even publish their findings in professional journals. Student researchers have access to state-of-the-art technologies including a psychology laboratory, a biofeedback center and clinical observation suites for audio and videotaping of dyadic or group activities.

PSY 201. Principles Of Psychology. 3 Hours.

A survey of significant theory, issues, methods of inquiry, and applications in all areas of psychology. Course Information: This course fulfills a general education requirement at UIS in the area of Social and Behavioral Sciences (IAI Code: S6 900).

PSY 212. Brain and Emotion. 3 Hours.
