Military and Veteran Resource Center Open House & Marine Corps Birthday Celebration

Come join us for our Open House event and celebration of the United States Marine Corps 248th birthday on Friday, November 10. Enjoy the opportunity to learn about how the UIS Department of Military and Veteran Student services supports Military-Connected Students. All are welcome to visit our new Resource Center and meet MVSS Director, Loren Easter.

Refreshments will be offered for the Open House and in honor of the USMC birthday celebration.

UIS student continued learning and leading his fraternity, while deployed with the Illinois Army National Guard

University of Illinois Springfield senior political science major Miguel Valente, 21 of Chicago, a specialist in the Illinois Army National Guard, continued to advance his college education, while being deployed to Texas as part of the Southwest Border Mission.

Valente worked with UIS professors, who made special accommodations to help him learn remotely, and the UIS Office of Military and Veterans Affairs to continue earning his UIS degree while deployed from Oct. 11, 2020 to Nov. 5, 2021.

UIS raises flag to honor Veteran's Day

University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) raised the American flag in a ceremony Thursday to commemorate Veteran's Day.

The annual Flag Raising Ceremony honored the holiday's historical connection to World War I.

Following the flag raising, Alicia Tate-Nadeau, the director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, gave a keynote address.

Application Process

To apply for a National Guard Grant Scholarship, the applicant must be on active duty status and have served for at least one year in the Illinois National Guard. Enlisted persons currently serving and company grade officers are eligible. Time served in other branches of the U.S. Armed forces does not count toward this requirement. The application can be obtained from the ISAC web site at www.collegezone.com and from your unit. You may also obtain this form in the Office of Financial Assistance.

Scholarship Opportunities

Institutional Scholarships

In addition to educational benefits, you may qualify for UIS Institutional Scholarships. UIS uses one application form for all institutional scholarships. You are strongly encouraged to complete this form annually. The form becomes available on Dec. 1 and is due by Feb. 15. Information about institutional scholarships and a link to the form can be found on the UIS Cost & Aid Scholarship page. Several of these scholarships are military and/or veteran focused including:

Navy Tuition Assistance

Naval Reservists must also meet the following requirements for TA eligibility:

  • Must have completed one year at their Navy Operational Support Center or equivalent to use TA funds.
  • Enlisted Naval Reservists must be ordered to active duty for 120 days or more and be on active duty for the duration of the course. Naval Reserve Officers must be ordered to active duty for two years beyond the course end date.

Note: Beginning 1 October 2019 in accordance with NAVADMIN 114/19:

Marine Corps Tuition Assistance

  • Must have completed two years on active duty
  • Cannot use TA while in a training status (schools)
  • Must provide a degree plan (from the school)
  • First time users must start with one course
  • Limit of two classes at a time for all students
  • No courses can overlap
  • Any issues must be resolved before more TA is used
  • No duplicate degrees or double majors
  • Authorized for up to the Master’s degree level
