Residency Requirement & Exemption Process

Residency Policy

All single freshmen and sophomore students under 21, not residing with parent(s) or legal guardian(s) and having earned fewer than 60 credit hours (earned after High School graduation, dual credit courses do not apply) are required to live on the UIS campus. Students not fulfilling their obligation to the on-campus residency requirement without an approved residency exemption request on file with the Department of Residence Life, will be billed accordingly for the cost of on campus housing.

Pest Control

Students Should

  • Maintain a clean household. This includes…
    • Removal of trash and waste on a regular basis. Discarded trash needs to be taken to the area waste receptacles and not placed outside the front doors, in the bushes or on the grassy areas.
    • Sweep and mop non-carpet based floors weekly.
    • Vacuum carpeted floors weekly.
    • Clean bathroom sink and tub weekly.
    • Pick up debris from your around the outside of your residency.

Laundry

Helpful Hints for Care of Your Clothing

  • Read labels for care of your garments. If an item says “Dry Clean Only” then the materials and fabric used to make the garment was intended for a gentle wash cycle with little water.

Heating and Cooling

West Campus Living – Pennyroyal, Marigold, Foxglove, Trillium

Thermostats allow you to choose between heat and cool at your discretion. Though an electronic limit has not be installed on your thermostat at this time, the recommended range of operation is 68 and 72 degrees. Setting the thermostat lower than 68 degrees when the air conditioning is on will cause the unit to freeze and stop functioning correctly.

Damage Charge List

Information Regarding Damages & Charges:

When a resident checks in to campus housing, they will be given their keys and room inventory. Each resident is responsible for making sure that all damages and deficiencies are noted on room inventory. They will be provided a deadline to turn in the completed form. When the resident checks out of campus housing, all damages and deficiencies not listed on the inventory check-in form will be charged to the resident(s) of the living unit.
