About Us

Here at UIS, the beginnings of the School of Health Sciences (HSC) trace back 50 years to the start of the Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) program. The CLS degree began at Sangamon State University and continued through the university’s transition to University of Illinois Springfield in 1995. In the 2015/2016 academic year the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science was renamed the Department of Allied Health when Exercise Science and Athletic Training were added to the curricular offerings at UIS. The Exercise Science baccalaureate program accepted its first students in Fall 2016 while the Master of Athletic Training program started its inaugural cohort in Summer 2019. In the Fall 2019 semester the growth, expansion, and updating of the ALH Department continued with the name change of Clinical Laboratory Science to Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) which aligned the program with the contemporary terminology utilized in the profession. Growth and modernization continued in Fall 2022, when the Department of Allied Health, which was housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was reorganized into the School of Health Sciences and moved to a newly formed College of Health, Science, and Technology. These changes helped to align the School of Health Sciences with like-minded programs and enhanced our ability to focus on collective values and goals within our new college.

The School of Health Sciences is committed to continuing to review, revise, and modernize each of the HSC programs which allows us to stay in tune with the ever-changing world of health care and provide our students with the current evidence-based training for professional practice.
